Since its release in 2016, it’s been a creation platform for loads of talented artists, however thanks an update in early 2018 that lets you animate 3D VR paintings, its attracted even more talent. Quill is a 3D creation tool that lets you physically paint or sculpt in VR. But other than designing a composition for the traditional 2D output in VR, you have to be mindful of space and build the scene all around the viewer.” With the modeled assets, you can freely move in the space and search for interesting angles, where to place the viewer. The duplication workflow also speeds up the process a whole lot. “In Quill, you can jump straight into doodling a character in 3D space and designing a scene with easy and super fast iterations. “The creative process is way more efficient and fun than traditional workflows,” artist Dan Franke says in an Oculus blog post. Transitions are cinematic without being immersion-breaking, intense visuals deftly grab your attention, and audio (best with headphones) makes this short feel like a living, breathing world. Without spoiling the story further, suffice it to say Studio Syro has taken many of the hard-won VR design concepts and applied it to Tales From Soda Island. Shameless plug: we've set up an official subreddit at /r/sodaplayer. They fixed a lot of networking issue in their latest version. Technical note: we're using the latest version of the acestream engine (not the one used by that famous Kodi addon, or the wine build that you can find online). Note 2: Soda Player has support for tvOS 10.2+ (the device verification thingy) for a while now, so no worry about that, it will work like a charm. You may have seen acestream links in the wild, they look like this: acestream://c42811e3efd72d5bdf3d2270976469fe5c0771ae (don't try this one, it's just an example link). Their official app is quite sketchy though (and Windows-only) but the protocol is performant and widely used. Note 1: for those of you who don't know about AceStream, it is by far the most widely used peer-to-peer live streaming protocol (think of torrents for live videos/events). You can download the app/update, or read more about it, at We would really like to hear if it works for you, or if you encounter any bugs. It's as easy as opening the app, then copy/pasting the acestream link. This works on Mac (and Windows), and obviously AirPlay'ing is fully supported (Chromecast'ing as well). We thought this would be of interest for some of you (especially Mac users): we've just released a version that natively supports AceStream (acestream:// links).
